Comments: Just wanted to say that this is a wonderful site. My Grandpa was telling me stories and I found his name on the 1953 ssd (Private 1st Class Jack E. Myers) He was with the 552 Signal maintenence co. from 1952-1954.
He told me stories of how him and a few other guys were building tents, he ended up breaking his ankle.
He told me that someone found out he had carpenter skills and had him build wooden floors for the tents, and he was going to paint the floors using air craft paint. He told me the paint smelled horrible and the men were complaining about painting it with bruses. So he had a few guys get some mops, he poured the paint on the wooden floors and mopped it on. He said by the time he was leaving the base (July 1954) They were getting ready or started to build concrete units.
Just letting you know, My Grandpa is well and very healthy as of today. If you would like to send him letters or any piece of mail, it can be sent to c/o Lisa M. Gibson 334 N. Sycamore St. Centralia, IL

Comments: Did anyone happen to know my father, Walter T. Palmer? He was a Sgt. stationed there in 1957 and 1958. I am his daughter. My Dad passed away in July, 2004, he would have loved this site! We lived in Chateau de Salvert. My mother's name is Doris and she is living in Andalusia, Alabama. I found the chateau on the internet and while trying to find out more info about it, I came across this site. My parents would have loved to have visited Saumur again, but it was one of those things they just didn't get too. If anyone has any memories of my Dad we would love to hear about them. Thank you so much.

Comments: Your site is very nice. It is wonderful to see Saumur the way it was thanks to the ones who took the pictures during their tour of duty. I was very young in that period. I met my future husband in 1963. We move to Orleans in 1964. He was stationed in Saran. I was a switchboard operator at Coligny Caserne until we left in august, 1966. We got marry in Olivet in 1965. Saumur was very different then, specially on the weekend when the bus would bring to Place Bilange the soldiers from Varrains for a night out. The MPs were very busy too. What a period. I look thru all the pictures specially the old ones. I remember some faces specially M et Mme Dimanche. They owned the little bar at the corner Rue St. Jean et Place Bilange. The PM's favorite stop on the weekend? Was Varrains segregated? Not to many black faces on the pictures? I know for a fact there were quite a few black GIS then. My first husband was black. His name was Charles F. Walker and he had a red MGB convertible. He was a SPC-4 in supply at that time. Maybe someone remembers him. We were divorced but he is still alive. He lives in Baltimore, MD. Thank you for bringing back the memories.

Comments: I was assigned to the 553rd Engineer Battalion (Orleans), which was TDY to the Chinon hospital area in 1961. We were there for only six months, during which time we built a sewage treatment plant at the Chinon Depot.
I'm afraid we were somewhat of a rowdy bunch, in trouble on a regular basis. Didn't get along well with folks who were not engineers, and didn't much like engineers who were not in our unit. I regret all that now that I'm mature. :-)
I visited Saumur two or three times on weekends, as I did other towns and villages within a 30 mile or so radius of Chinon. I found the Chinon site by visiting your site, and I appreciate that very much. Unfortunately, I've never returned to Europe. Some day . . . :)

Our first daughter was born at Chinon in '65. The second in Heidelberg in '75. Our last visit to France was in 1983. The French people we knew will always be part of our FAMILY.

Comments: I did a walking tour of The Loire in 1993 and our pathway lead to the Chateau on top of the hill in Saumur. We wondered down into the town and were treated to a boat trip on the Loire with champagne. I loved it so much I brought my husband to Saumur last year (2005) and we stayed in the Hotel Anne something(?) right there on the river with the Chateau behind us. There had been some subsidence on the side of the Chateau.
We enjoyed our night there with a lovely dinner in front of the old church door in the square.
Thank you for your wonderful site. All the luck for the future. Dot

We have decided this year in place of a picnic to have a reunion with a diner at a good restaurant. There will be no ceremony at the old Depot. The ceremony at the old Depot will once every 2 years. This year the diner will be on the 10 of Sept. If any of you will be in France at that time you will all be welcome.

Comments: Karl Kramer, I too was surprised to find this web site. Never mind ComZ, people even today are surprised that troops were stationed in France. I too got to wear the ComZ patch. I was stationed with the HQ Co. 7966 Army Unit in the Orleans Installation, also known as the Coligny Caserne, Dec.1954 to May 1956. 110 kilometers south of Paris. Any weekend that I was not on guard duty, I was in Paris. I had a few choice assignments: military personnel, G-3, and finished off with TI&E. Yes those were the days.

Comments: I was surprised to find a site for those stationed in France. I thought we were all gone because one never hears of Com Z. I was stationed at Fontenet in '55 and '56. Old brown shoe army! Was in post communications. Telephone installer and switchboard operator. Still have one khaki shirt with Com Z patch on it. Fontenet was an ordinance depot and they didn't want us to wear our signal flag collar brass but we did. I remember the col. who gave the order staring us down during a parade once because not only did we have the flags on but we had our orange scarves one as well. Ah, those were the days!

Grothouse. Seems everyone here was before my time. I can not seem to find old friend at all. Most GI's and some French. Was active @ the Red Cross Ctr. in Verdun. If anyone remembers me write. Comments: STORY OF VARRAINS
ONE BEAUTIFUL MORNING IN THE 1959
HABITENTS OF LA RUE DES ROCHES MEUVES IN VARRAINS WERE SURPRISED BY UNCOMMON NOISES AND VOICES. QU'ES-CE QUE C'EST
(WHAT'S HAPPENING).
TOGETHER AT THEIR DOOR STEPS THEY DISCOVERED A SURPRISING SPECTACLE, THE HORSE AND THE CART OF PERE EMILE WAS BLOCKED BY ONE BIG RED LARGE AMERICAN BUICK. FOR SURE THEY SAID BOTH OF THEM WILL NOT GET THRU, CHEWING HIS GUM THE DRIVER A BIG HEAVY SERGEANT BACKED UP AND LET THE BRAVE FRENCHMAN WITH HIS BERET AND HIS CIGARETTE ON THE CORNER OF HIS MOUTH GO THRU.
SOME OF US REMEMBER THIS PERIOD OF 1950 THRU 1966 (SIXTEEN YEARS) IN WHICH OUR TROOPS CAME TO SETTLE THEIR FORCES ON THE SOIL OF FRANCE. WITH THE OTAN PLAN TWO OR THREE THOUSAND
SOLDIERS ARRIVE IN FRENCH TERRITORY.
IN 1954 IN ST CYR EN BOURG, THE GENERAL SIGNAL DEPOT TAKES OVER THE CHATEAU DES IFS IN VARRAINS. HERE THEY BUILT THEIR BARRACKS, BOWLING ALLEY, GYM , PX, MOVIE THEATER, MESS HALL, AND CHAPEL. EVERY YEAR THEY HAD OPEN HOUSE AND CHRISTMAS PARTIES FOR THE FRENCH NEIGHBORS. THERE THE FRENCH DISCOVERED HUGE BBQ'S SMOKING HUGE PIECES OF BEEF FROM THE US, AND ALSO LEARNED TO CHEW GUM GIVEN TO THEM BY AMERICANS GI.
IN ST CYR EN BOURG WHERE THEY BUILT HOUSES FOR THE AMERICAN FAMILIES AND THEY ARE STILL THERE BUT NOW FRENCH FAMILIES HAVE BOUGHT THEM AND THEY STILL LOOK GOOD. THE NAME OF THE AMERICAN VILLAGE WAS CALLED LA CITE FOSTER DULLES. IT WAS SURPRISING FOR THE FRENCH TO SEE THE AMERICAN WOMAN IN CURLERS MOST OF THE DAY.
THE AMERICAN FAMILIES HARDLY USED THE LOCAL SHOPS, THEY IMPORTED ALL THERE PRODUCTS EXCEPT THE GOOD FRENCH WINE. SOME OF THE PEOPLE AROUND VARRAINS AND CHACE WORKED IN MERON FOR THE AMERICAN INSTALLATION.
THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE SAUMUROIS AND THE AMERICANS WERE QUITE GOOD AND QUITE A FEW WEDDINGS WERE CELEBRATED BETWEEN FRENCH GIRLS AND AMERICAN GI'S. SOME LEFT TO THE USA AND SOME STAYED IN THE VARRAINS AREA.
I CONSIDER MY SELF LUCKY AS I MARRIED ONE AND WE HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 45 YEARS.

Comments: Hi, Ingrandes was the only base I remember living on, until we moved back to the USA. I remember living "on the economy"-I think that was the phrase- for the balance of our years in France. My brother, sister and I went to a nearby French school in Fouchrolle (sp?) while we lived on base and I would love to visit that little village again, if I could only find it on a map! I remember stopping on our way home from school to pick up fresh baguettes for dinner. I found your website, purely by chance, while searching for Ingrandes on the web. I would love more information and photos of the area. I have never been back but have wanted to for many years. So this year, I would like to take a trip back there for a visit. My three younger brothers were born in Chinon, so it was fun seeing Chinon mentioned too. We lived in Paris before we went to Ingrandes, and us older three kids were all born in Heidelberg, Germany. I loved living overseas, my parents made sure we traveled as much as possible. It was an incredible time in my Life. Thanks for any help and thanks for some sweet memories. I will pass this website on to my dad, as he may recognize some of the people mentioned. Thank you so much for putting this together.

I don't know if anyone can help me with this.
Back in the mid sixties my wife sang with a British band in the area of Chinon for the US troops there.
She particularly remembers socializing with US Army Engineers in that area.
She was also hospitalized in the military hospital, (with a gunshot wound!) for some time.
Can anyone help me find out what engineer units were around there at the time?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Good luck to you all.

Comments: The France trip was a success. At least we didn’t get sick or have an accident. The weather was perfect, 70’s the entire time with only a brief shower one day. We stayed in Paris for 8 days at a hotel on the right bank. It was a good place to stay. Metro just around the corner and the breakfasts and staff were very good also. I think the biggest surprise were the high prices which I hadn’t expected. $10 for a 60 cl (little over a pint) glass of Kronenburg or 1664 beer; almost $6 for a gallon of gas.

We didn’t see any of the tourist attractions because we’ve seen them all anyway. My aim on this trip was to take pictures, if any, of people and to talk with a lot of people which I did wherever I could. One conversation I remember rather well with a young housewife where I shared a park bench. We were talking about the neighborhood bakery and I said it didn’t seem like it was a very good bakery. She said that it really was the best around and then offered the end of a loaf of bread she had just purchased to prove it. I declined on the basis that it would ruin the loaf if the end was broken but it got me to thinking that no one has ever offered me the end of a Mrs. Karl’s loaf in the US. I was impressed with the gesture.

As for the people we didn’t have one single negative experience. When I started a conversation all were willing and even enthusiastic to talk. In Saumur I struck up a conversation with 5 women who were traveling together from Brittany. They were so much fun and I think they would have liked it if we had stuck with them for a while. I think they were taking a break from their husbands and were having a good time for a change.

After Paris we rented a car from Eurocar, a Renault van with A/C and auto. It worked well the whole time but it was so controlled by computers that it took a while to get used to. I don’t think I ever learned how to tune the radio or turn on the lights. There was no key just a card like a thick charge card that you stuck in the dash. There was a ‘Start’ button but no key starter. When you pressed the ‘Start’ button nothing happened for a few seconds and then it started if all the conditions were OK. Sort of like starting Windows on a PC.

The rules of the road in Europe have not changed; no passing on the right, no riding the left lane, no trucks in the left lane ever, trucks must not drive over 55 (and they don’t), no cell phones while driving. All good rules that should be instigated over here. Since you must be 18 to drive there are no smart aleck teens on the road with loud music or noisy cars. There is a one-year probation period when you do get a license and violations during that time are dealt with harshly, almost like starting over. Another good rule! All in all driving in France is a pleasant experience because you almost always know what to expect from other drivers. All it needs is a little more space to drive in.

The biggest problem seemed to be in navigation. French road signs stink! I don’t remember it being like that in previous trips. They will announce a destination 40 miles ahead of the turnoff and then nothing at the turnoff itself. Very frustrating at times. We were constantly missing where we wanted to go. What is it with those Rappel signs? No one seems to know what they mean but they are every few miles. I think they blew their fund allocation on Rappel signs. Speaking of signs the French are still hyper about translating anything into English especially if it is a critical info. I have to laugh at some of the signs. I remember one which read ‘Inserte la Carte”. Now any idiot knows what that means but underneath it read ‘Insert the Card’ in English.

I’m not an entrepreneur or a business type person but it always seems to me like everywhere I look I see something that could be improved with a minimum of expense or effort. Ice is a good example. I usually don’t need ice but Char is a fanatic about ice. When I ask for ice, like at the hotel, the person usually says with a tone of pride that, Oui, they have ice and then proceed to bring a small coffee cup with 3 or 4 cubes in it. For Cry’n out loud, buy a dam ice machine and stick it in the lobby! You are in the tourist business!

We stayed in Saumur for 3 nights but after leaving we decided we should have stayed longer because we had a good time there and it was a good hotel, etc. I got together with Bill Messner again and we did the tour. This time I asked him to take me to Montreuil-Bellay, a small town just a few miles south of Saumur. I’d read on the Internet of people who had gone there and thought it was the best town in France. It turned out to be just that. I think when I die I’d like to go there instead of heaven.

I also met with Ludovic Whitman and his girl friend, Aline. He is the grandson of a guy who was stationed at Saumur the same time as I was. We spent an evening with them and we went to his parent’s house and killed a bottle of home made wine, which was quite good. Really nice people.

When I visited the old depot with Bill we got to go into some of the buildings there which I’d never had the opportunity to do before. I went through the first barracks building on all three floors. There is nothing left to remind me of anything. Even the toilets and showers have been ripped out. The first floor is a mechanics shop with a big door punched in the side. Got to split a bottle of wine with a couple of Frenchmen who were working there. Also homemade from some illegal grapes whatever that means. Good Stuff.

Also got inside the gym which is almost exactly as we left it down to the paint on the walls. It even still smells the same. There was a wedding there at the time so I also got to go into the old bowling alley. The alleys have been ripped out and there was extensive remodeling. Didn’t recognize much there. I also stopped a guy who lives in one of the Chateau apartments. He is a student in Saumur. Students rent most of the apartments in the chateau. He and none of the others were aware that it was once an Army post. I told him about how the chateau was used as our infirmary, PX and hobby shop. The stone building that once was the barbershop, laundry and Quartermaster Store is now a summer home for someone who only lives there a few months a year.

From Saumur we drove to the west coast and saw all the Normandy stuff, Deauville, Mont St Michel, St Lo, St Mere Eglise, invasion beaches and the cemeteries. The Normandy Invasion celebrations are lasting until the end of August which I did not know. The best visit was to Pointe du Huc which is the place where American rangers had to climb a steep cliff to get ashore. The French have given 30 acres of the area to the US and everything is just as it was after the landing. Very interesting!

After Normandy we went back to Paris, turned in the car and stayed 3 days in a hotel near the airport. We took the train to Paris each day.

There are some pictures of the trip on my website if you are interested. Click on the green button, ‘Photos 2004’.

I loved Cannes during two film festivals (one with Sly Stallone and Ann Gillian hosting a gala event with us sailors and marines). I loved long topless beach in Nice several times. But the best is when a town up north through a parade for thirty sailors, gave us the keys to the town, and danced and drank into the wee hours in honor of the U.S. liberating them and their families 46 years earlier from the Germans. Viva La France!!!

The unit was deactivated and my company was transferred to Ingrandes Depot. I was there living in tents until april 1954. I transferred to the 43rd Div in
Sheridan Kaserne Augsburg until 1956. The unit by then was the 5th Div. and moved to Fort Ord. Where I was assigned to Hq & Hq Co 3rd Breg. and discharged in Feb. 1958. I was Ration breakdown Sgt for the 3rd Brig. a training outfit. I traveled back to Ingrandes in 1996 and found a shoe factory where the camp used to be. While in Ingrandes, I stopped by the local bakery and found the lady that owned it was the Sec. to the Camp commander. She invited my wife and in into her kitchen for coffee and cake.
My service in the US Army was from Feb. 1953 to Feb. 1958. 3 years in Europe and 2 at Fort Ord.

Comments: I was just wondering if anyone knew of or needed a young French couple who could work for them. They have been living in Canada for two years and she is going to school at Montreal to complete her English. They were born in Saumur and have been back to the states a couple times and have put there names in the lotto to come here and live with a work permit. They are my niece and nephew and our really a cute couple, and there ages are 37 and 34. They want to come to the states really bad and Ginette and I would sponsor them but so far we haven't talked to the right people or able to get them to stay. There English is very good and they would work at all most anything. Just putting our feelers to see if anyone has been in this situation.

Comments: Hello,
I am SP5 Peter C Mennell, HQ Co, Maginot Caserne, Verdun (1965 - 1967). I worked at Chicago Area, then on a little post newspaper called "Maginot Caserne", and later in the Maginot Caserne HQ Co orderly room after the paper was closed down. Just prior to our pull-out in '67 I helped load ammunition from bunkers in the woods to be taken to Germany by truck. Anyone else remember that??
I would love to hear from anyone who was there when I was, or who knew me, to exchange memories of a wonderful time.
Those years in France were the best of my life; if only I could have understood or appreciated that at the time. But I'm probably not alone there...
Thanks for a great site!

Say, if any of you guys are interested in a reunion at Chatellerault, France, please let me know. Hopefully, some Ingrandes troopers will read and respond to my request, but Saumur soldiers would be welcome too! Hopefully, this will take place in 2004, but no firm date has been set yet. My utmost respect goes out to the US Military personnel and dependents that took the time out of their lives to serve their country and spend the tour of duty there. Further, I have the greatest admiration to those brave Americans who fought for the freedom of that country and the thousands that made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless The USA

Having experienced the vagabond life as a dependent of a career military officer, your site imparts to me a sense of belonging and community which I still long for to this day.

It also reminds me that we are part of a world community and should embrace our friends and allies even if we disagree.

Thank you.

On Sunday, 11/17/2002, I signed the Guest Book and commented that my (then) wife, Carol Ann Perrica, and I had some good local friends, Jacque and Michelle Kostka, in the City of Verdun where I was based between 1961 and 1964. I've just replied to an email from Jacques Kostka that he and Michelle noted their names in that entry. That friendship was almost 40 years ago! They now live in Luxembourg. Michelle is general manager of Emaux de Longwy, Longwy, France, 50 miles east of Verdun. By the way, they have a web site at www.emauxdelongwy.com. Thank you so much for this web site.

Comments: Was stationed at Saumur Signal Depot from August of 1953 until September of 1954. Much of that time Lou Sisk was also stationed at SSD. Believe he left in either January or February of 1955. When I first found this site I was pleasantly surprised to find that Lou had included his email address and his telephone number. I renewed contact with him after nearly fifty years. When we first spoke I learned that Lou had written a book about Saumur and was waiting for his publisher to have the first printing. The name of the book is "The Dark Is All Gone" and I could not wait to buy a copy. Lou was gracious enough to sign a copy for me and as soon as I had it in my hands I could not put it down. His words painted a picture that allowed me to reopen memories that somehow had been relegated to an unused "floppy" in the archives of my now "senior" brain. I could picture myself opening the flap of the twelve man tents and then two weeks before I rotated home, moving into the "new" barracks.

Guys, I think you all should get a copy of his book. Even if you were not stationed at Saumur during that time I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy reading about what the SSD was like when it first opened.

Lou, thank you for all the fond memories about the 552nd Signal Base Maintenance Company and The Saumur Signal Depot.

Comments: WOW!! How many times have I wished I could find out where all you guys are! And to see photos of good old Saumur. What a treat. This website is a real blessing! I was at the HQ CO. of the Depot from Feb 61 to Aug 63. I was a Personnel Specialist and tended bar at the EM Club and Officer's Club. Guys that I remember are Don Kalb, Tom Shaffer, Freddie O'Connell, Eddie Linzer (the Brooklyn Lawyer), Doug Fantuzzi from NYC, Ned the MP, Jim Long with his TVR, Gerald Uhlmansiek (the craziest guy on the Post). Col. Schaudt was the CO of the Post and he used to give me a ride back to the barracks when Uhlmansieck was his driver.
Thanks to everyone involved so very much for doing this site.
I also remember Francoise Galland, my French girlfriend, but I better not say much more than that!
Hope to hear from some of you turkeys.

I fondly remember my time touring the Poitou-Charente area, for part of the time (at least) in our big American car. I also remember attending a military show at the French Military School in Saumur, circa 1958, when they got 13 people on to a moving motorcycle! I returned to Poitiers in 1979 and also found that it had changed remarkably. Thanks for the memories.

I was stationed in Massweiler, Germany in 1956 in the 12th Ordinance Battalion before going to Verdun for 2 years (1957-1959) with the 97th Engineers Co. C. I was an electrician. I was SP4, stayed T.D.V. most of the time, very good duty. I remember staying over night in Saumur. Also T.D.Y. Chinon, Tours & Orleans. I would like to hear from anyone that was with the 97th Co. C. in 57-59. Does anyone know what happened to the Verdun guest book? Thanks again for the great site!!

Comments: I was referred to this site by Arnold Lauer (JERZBOY445). It is an absolutely beautiful website. Keep up the good work. I was an SP5 with the Garrison at Caserne Maginot, Verdun, 1961 to 1964. Worked at the Education Center; then later in Chicago Area Transportation. My (then) wife, Carol Ann Perrica, and I lived on the Avenue of the 42nd Division. She worked for Colonel Smith, HQ 4th Logistical Command. Had some great friends in the 97th Engrs, Tom and Sally Hawks, for one couple. Also some good local friends. One couple in particular, Jacque & Michelle Kostka. Loved France and Verdun and traveling around Europe. I revisited Europe and Verdun ten years ago, but have not been back since. Retired from the Army (Sergeant Major) end of 1981 and was appointed immediately afterwards as a Virginia magistrate. Duties kept me from doing a lot of traveling. Retired from that at end of 2001 and I'm planning another trip to France. Would love to hear from people who were assigned there and lived there. Again, thanks for a beautiful aide memoire.

We were three work crews which were mainly TDY (temporary duty) to other Army installations putting in new telephone pole line construction. Our area was from Saumur and south, also as far west as the border with Spain. We would only return to Saumur when there was a dental or other medical visit.
I miss the EM club! Nickel Night for a Heineken. You'll never see that again!
Over the years I have lost contact with the guy's that I knew in the 532nd. If you're out there, let's hear from you.

My wife Sue and I spent two years in France at St. Jean D'Angeley and Saumur Signal Depot, from Oct. 1956 to Oct. 1958. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Loire River area, and in 1996 when I retired we made a trip back to the region. Wow, what a difference 38 years made. The French have done a remarkable job in modernizing, especially their highway system. I am sending you some old photos, and you may use any that you wish. Great site. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you in Nov. in Salem, Mass.

Comments: Greetings from Paradise (almost)

Just received Jim Gallagher's latest Newsletter which spoke so highly of Ed's site. Haven't been here for years, and I must commend Ed on his hard work, terrific research, and dedication to this cause. Thanks a million, Ed.

I was stationed in the Controller's office at SSD April '58 to Mar '59. The other bandits in the group included Gallagher, Snoopy, Kovarick, Richards, Malon, Givens, Dryden, Selligher, the Pack Rat, the Pig Farmer, Mills, Tracey and many others. We did have a bit of fun, didn't we.

As I read the Newsletter I found it difficult to realize that it's been five years since Cedar Rapids. It was great to see many of you at that time. My wife, Nancy, and I hope to make this upcoming affair, but we won't be able to finalize until later.

Some of you will probably be surprised that I'm still alive. A few months after my cancer (likely from first- and second-hand smoke at the EM club) operation in '98, my computer crashed real bad and I lost all my e-mail addresses. So, many of you have not heard from me for years. Again, thanks for all of you who sent encouraging e-mails and cards at that time. It worked!

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who cares to write.

Comments: I had an Army sponsored visit to the Saumur depot from Sept. to Nov. 1961. Thanks to the Berlin Wall crisis my outfit, Company C of the 97th Engineers, was convoyed in from our permanent base at Verdun/Etain to build a tent city for incoming troops from CONUS (the United States to you non-military types). We worked 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week until our part of the job was done, so I didn’t get to see the town or much of the area (I remember lots of trees outside the depot, right?). We billeted at the nearby army hospital in a wing next to the Rod and Gun Club and engaged in a great brawl one night with another engineer outfit. We won!
I also spent about five days in the medical part of the hospital after I was struck in the face with a flying hammer during construction. My nose was broken and they had to transport me to the hospital in the only vehicle available, a 5-ton dump truck. The driver, a ‘buddy’, made me ride with my head out the window because he didn’t want blood all over the cab. I thought that the MP’s at the depot gate were going to faint when they saw me but they held on long enough to waive us thru. We arrived at the outpatient clinic about the time the pregnant spouses were arriving for their regular prenatal examination, and my appearance caused more than a few gasps. The hospital stay was nice, the people great, and the break from the work welcome.
Yes, I remember Saumur.

At the time I didn't think to much of France as being young and just off the farm. As I look back, I did learn a lot and met many many fine people. Now after 40 years, I wonder what has happen to them. The places traveled to and visited the French people I met will be with me, hopefully another 40 years. I really enjoyed my time in France, and spent a lot of time in the Bar St. Moritz, perhaps too much time. I knew SP4 Long, SP4 Lynn and SSG Field, along with other names I have forgotten, or cannot recall at this moment. Our commander at that time was Col. Schaudt, and one of my company commanders was Lt. Soo. Lt. Soo's wife taught some of the Polish guards English and some other subjects. I discovered your site, as I am doing my family tree and some history and got on the net to search for info and pictures of the City of Saumur. It was a very pleasant surprise to find the Saumur SD site. Thanks.

Comments: Found this site by chance. I am a native of Saumur, worked at the Depot in 1959 for just a few months, married a lieutenant, who was with the Corps of Engineer, building there, and moved to the states. I am looking for lieutenant Washington McCabe who was a witness at my wedding. There is one thing I did not find on this site concerning Saumur, it was a WWII prisoner of war camp, my grandfather was detained there at the time. Also a part of the wall of the castle fell on the town last year, creating chaos, fortunately no one was hurt.
For me Saumur will always be a great part of my heart. Did not attend the reunion last year, as we usually go to Saumur for Xmas.
Thank you so much for bringing back memories.

Comments: Great site! Way to go! Larry Randall steered me here.
I was actually assigned to the 553rd Engr. Battalion at Mason Forte (Orleans), and TDY to Chinon, where we built a sewage treatment plant in 1961. Spent 6 mo. living at the Army Hosp Chinon. Spent a lot of time in the smaller towns in the area. Also quite a few weekends in Tours.
I have fond memories of Saumur. A friend and I were arrested there one evening for riding my Lambretta  without papers. They actually locked the scooter in a cell and turned us over to the MPs. I notice an entry from a former Saumur MP. Wouldn't that be funny?
I remember a French dance hall somewhere along the river between Chinon and Saumur.
Returned to Orleans and from there transferred to Kaiserslautern, Ger. in 1962. I have always wished I had remained in France.
Thank you for your site.

I lived in town on Rue Marechal Leclerc with a beautiful view of the Saumur Castle from my windows. I took a lot of pictures, I will include them at a later date. You have a great and memorable site.
Take care,

Comments: I was lucky enough to spend two wonderful years in France and left in 1960 when my father retired at Saumur after 26 years with the Army. Col Schadt (spelling) was the base commander then. There were a couple of people who served at the  SSD that I've run into over the years who shared the experience with us. I've since lost track of them and would appreciate any news of them. Sgt. Pete Kizma, Specialist Walter Sullivan (who was with Special Services and managed the base gym). You have created an absolutely wonderful web site and I want to thank you for an amazing, albeit emotional return to one of the best experiences of my youth. Could you tell me if there is a way to find the whereabouts of some of the wonderful French people who we knew while we were there?
My deepest thanks,
Bob Ryan

The ones that came were: Clarence Madsen, Fred Felkins, Joe Estridge, John Guinn, Eddie Powers, Leo Badish, Francis Deserable, Henry Ghilardi and Fred Johnson. These were in Saumur during the time frame of 1954 through 1958.
We will be getting together next year. We have not set the date yet, but it will be around the same time of the year. Any that are interested in attending are welcome and can contact by e-mail at mofredj@aol.com or drop a note to Fred Johnson, 565 Primrose, Republic, MO 65738.

Comments: I was stationed at the Saumur Signal Depot from June, 1955 to May, 1956.
I bunked next to Jock Thornton and George Whitefield. ("Hi," Jock and George, if you should happen to read this.)
My 2 best buddies were Freddie Taylor from Boston, and Joey Sibilia from Brooklyn. Does anybody know what happened to either of them?
I worked at the packing and shipping warehouse for a while, and then at the Storage Depot (The Caves.)
One of my lifelong dreams is about to come true -- Thursday, the 15th of March 2001, my oldest son, Jon, is taking my wife, "George" (George Anne) and me to Paris for a week as a combined XMAS/Anniversary present. After graduating (from YALE) in 1990, he went to Paris and worked there for a year. He has a lady friend (Adeline) who lives in Paris, and she is going to drive all of us to Saumur for the day (I hope more) to visit the town and the base.
You can imagine what an experience this is going to be for my family who has heard me recount memories of my time in France, and particularly for me having last seen Saumur almost 45 years ago.
Thanks to the men who put the website together and who took the time to inform me about Saumur and its military alumni. You folks have done a terrific job.

Comments: Was stationed with the 75th Ammo Sqd at St Mihiel, France. We got there in Jan-52, It was cold and we lived in old French barracks that didn't have windows or doors. We burnt coal in small pot belly stoves. We had to go to Barle-Duc, (spelling?) for showers. We ate a lot of C-Rations that was cooked on field stoves, Are there any body out there that knows what happened to this base? Would like to hear from somebody. Our job was to build a ammo dump, During excavation, we uncovered a lot of bones. We used to explore the caves in the surrounding hills and found a lot of old rifles and grenades from WW1. I wish I could go back to just visit. Real beautiful country.

I looked at my map and by chance decided to drive to Saumur. I stayed 3 days and fell in love with this wonderful little town. I had no idea is once was home to a signal unit. A new theater was built; bowling alley was built; parking lot and roads were paved. Was stationed in Saumur from June, 1956 to December, 1958. I worked in the post engineers; our main purpose was supplying electric power to the cave and operation area. But that ended when it was moved to the new area.

Comments: We just got back from the Saumur Signal Depot Reunion and had a very exciting time. Going over on American Airline I had made a comment that it was our 40th wedding anniversary on Sept 16th the same day as the reunion, so the
stewardess brought a bottle of champagne and we had a toast. What a way to start off a trip.
On the 15th of September I had the privilege to meet Bill Messner and his wife Josette, along with three Frenchman, Bernard Quelin, Guy Fromy, and Pierre Labrousse, the president of the club at the old bowling alley. The old bowling alley is now fixed up and added on to for large banquets, weddings or any large get together. Again we had an other toast (oh how I hate those toast.)

They were getting things together for the following day. The following day was the big day at Montreuil Bellay at the old Depot which doesn't look like it did forty years ago. There are many new buildings and the old cement buildings have new sidings on them so you wouldn't recognize them. It is a large industrial area. At 11:00 AM they had the flag raising of both the American and French flags and the National Anthems. It made you think of the long years back. Pirre Labrousee gave a short speech and said there will be Champagne at the court house in Montreuil Bellay (again). The mayor gave a short speech and the bottles started popping.

After, everyone was on their way to Varrians at the old bowling alley for a great banquet (the food and wine was great) for the reunion. There were a total of 156 people but just a few Americans. I met Bill Messner and his wife Josette who now lives in the Saumur area and Bill Williams and his wife who live around Angers. The rest were French people who had worked at the Depot and are now located all over France. The banquet lasted longer then we could make it, as we left about Ten O'clock and they were still going strong. Over all it was a great day and I want to thank everyone over there for the time that they spent to make it
a big success. We spoke to quite a few of the French people and they are still happy that all of us could get together.
Hope next one more Americans can make it before we all get too old.

Comments: Hi all you guys. I am back here in the states for a few weeks. Just wanted to let you know that we are having our reunion of all the ancient workers that worked at the Saumur Signal Depot. The date is Sept 16th year 2000. At the chateau des Ifs in what used to be the old bowling alley which as been converted into a real nice hall where they hold just about anything, from weddings to dances. So we have plenty of room.
So if any of you can get over that way. Just let me know and will be happy to help out in any way. We are expecting some
of you over. Let us know.

Do not think he is feeling the best. So, maybe it will need to go on the back burner for now. Al Kovarick may know more than I and will check with him. All the best to you!

In 1969 and early 1970 I had the dubious pleasure of living out of a foxhole in the Nam. Without doubt, a duty station like Saumur would have been preferable (in fact, any other duty station would have been better...lol)...Thanks again to all of you for this excellent site.

I intend to visit Europe this summer for 3 weeks and will spend a few days in Saumur. I'm so sorry to hear that the buildings at the former depot are in disarray. Any information you may have to assist me during my visit this summer will really be helpful.
Thanks for bringing back some fond memories!
